Symptoms

  • The air conditioner does not cool or cools poorly
  • Evaporator freezing
  • Abnormally low pressure in the air conditioning system
  • The climate control fault indicator is on
  • The air conditioning compressor turns off immediately after turning on

Causes

  • Mechanical jamming of the expansion valve
  • Valve contamination by particles from the system
  • Actuator stepper motor malfunction
  • Moisture entering the refrigerant system
  • Incorrect refrigerant pressure

How to Fix

  1. Read air conditioning system error codes
  2. Check the refrigerant pressure with a manifold gauge
  3. Check the operation of the valve actuator (stepper motor)
  4. Flush the system if there is contamination
  5. Replace expansion valve with actuator
  6. Charge the system with refrigerant and check the operation of the air conditioner
