Symptoms

  • ABS warning light is on
  • Anti-lock brake system does not work
  • ESP and traction control systems disabled
  • The speedometer may show incorrect data
  • Unstable vehicle behavior during emergency braking

Causes

  • Rear wheel speed sensor malfunction
  • Broken or damaged sensor wiring
  • Contamination or damage to the drive ring (impulse rotor)
  • Increased gap between sensor and drive ring
  • Oxidation of sensor connector contacts
  • ABS control unit malfunction

How to Fix

  1. Read error codes and determine which rear sensor is faulty
  2. Inspect the speed sensor and its connector for damage or dirt.
  3. Check the sensor resistance with a multimeter (typical value 800-1400 ohms)
  4. Inspect the drive ring on the hub - it should not be cracked, chipped or dirty
  5. Check the gap between the sensor and the drive ring
  6. Replace the speed sensor if necessary
