Symptoms
- ABS warning light is on
- Anti-lock brake system does not work
- ESP and traction control systems disabled
- The speedometer may show incorrect data
- Unstable vehicle behavior during emergency braking
Causes
- Rear wheel speed sensor malfunction
- Broken or damaged sensor wiring
- Contamination or damage to the drive ring (impulse rotor)
- Increased gap between sensor and drive ring
- Oxidation of sensor connector contacts
- ABS control unit malfunction
How to Fix
- Read error codes and determine which rear sensor is faulty
- Inspect the speed sensor and its connector for damage or dirt.
- Check the sensor resistance with a multimeter (typical value 800-1400 ohms)
- Inspect the drive ring on the hub - it should not be cracked, chipped or dirty
- Check the gap between the sensor and the drive ring
- Replace the speed sensor if necessary
