Symptoms

• ABS warning light is on
• ABS system is completely inoperative
• Possible smell of burnt insulation from the ABS unit
• ABS pump fuse blows
• ESP and traction control disabled

Causes

• Short circuit of the ABS pump motor winding
• Damage to the insulation of the pump circuit wiring
• Moisture in the connector or motor
• Mechanical damage to the wiring harness
• Malfunction of the control relay or transistor in the ABS unit

How to Fix

1. Run diagnostics and read all ABS/ESP error codes
2. Check the ABS pump fuse - if it is blown, do not install a larger fuse
3. Measure the resistance and insulation of the pump motor winding
4. Inspect the wiring from the ABS unit to the pump for damage to the insulation
5. Check connectors for moisture and oxidation
6. If the motor malfunctions, replace the ABS hydraulic unit or electric motor
