Symptoms

  • Unable to switch all-wheel drive mode
  • The 4WD / Service 4WD indicator on the dashboard is flashing
  • Transfer case stuck in one mode
  • Extraneous noise when trying to switch
  • The vehicle is moving in a mode that does not correspond to the selected one

Causes

  • Wear of transfer case encoder contacts
  • Transfer case drive motor malfunction
  • Broken or damaged wiring between the encoder and the control unit
  • Oxidation of the encoder connector
  • Mechanical damage to transfer case drive gears

How to Fix

  1. Read error codes with an all-wheel drive scanner
  2. Check the encoder connector for oxidation and damage
  3. Measure the resistance and voltage at the encoder pins
  4. Check the operation of the transfer case drive motor
  5. Replace the transfer case encoder (position sensor)
  6. After replacement, perform the procedure for training the new encoder with a scanner
