Symptoms

  • The parking brake warning lamp stays on constantly or does not come on at all.
  • ESP/Auto Hold system does not work correctly
  • Hill Start Assist does not work
  • Sound signal when driving with the handbrake “supposedly” on
  • Parking brake error message on display

Causes

  • Parking brake limit switch faulty
  • Open or short circuit in switch wiring
  • Misadjustment or mechanical damage to the switch
  • Oxidation of connector contacts
  • EPB button malfunction (on vehicles with electric parking brake)

How to Fix

  1. Read the error codes and check the status of the parking brake switch with a scanner
  2. Check the operation of the switch - it should change state when the brake is turned on/off
  3. Measure the voltage and resistance at the switch contacts
  4. Inspect the wiring and connector for damage
  5. Replace or adjust the limit switch
  6. Reset the error and check for correct operation
