Symptoms

• Rough engine idle

Causes

• Faulty VVT (variable timing) solenoid
• Clogged oil channels of the VVT system
• Stretched or damaged timing chain
• Wear of the camshaft phase shifter
• Using the wrong engine oil
• Low oil pressure in the system
• Camshaft position sensor malfunction
• ECU or wiring problems

How to Fix

1. Read error codes using an OBD scanner
2. Check the level and quality of engine oil
3. Replace the oil and oil filter with those recommended by the manufacturer
4. Check VVT solenoid operation using a multimeter
5. Clean or replace VVT solenoid as necessary
6. Check the tension and condition of the timing chain
7. Replace the timing chain and tensioner if wear is detected.
8. Check the camshaft position sensor and its wiring
9. Clear error codes and take a test drive
