Symptoms

• Unstable engine idling
• Reduced engine power
• Increased fuel consumption
• Check Engine light comes on
• Difficulty starting the engine
• Engine knocking or knocking
• Rough engine operation under load

Causes

• VVT solenoid valve malfunction
• Damaged wiring or connectors in the solenoid circuit
• Short circuit to ground in the circuit
• Engine control module (ECM) malfunction
• Low voltage on-board network
• Corrosion or oxidation of contacts
• Open circuit in solenoid power supply
• Faulty relay or fuse

How to Fix

1. Connect the OBD-II scanner and read all error codes
2. Check the condition of fuses and relays of the VVT system
3. Visually inspect the solenoid wiring and connectors for damage.
4. Measure the supply voltage at the VVT solenoid connector
5. Check the resistance of the solenoid winding with a multimeter
6. Clean the connector contacts from corrosion and oxidation
7. Check the circuit for a short to ground.
8. If necessary, replace damaged wiring
9. Replace faulty VVT solenoid
10. Clear error codes and test drive
