P0196

Engine Oil Temperature Sensor A Range/Performance

Severity
Low
Can you drive?
Limited driving only, diagnose soon
Approx. repair cost
$22–89 (est.)

Symptoms

  • Check Engine light on dashboard
  • Possible related VVT codes (P0010, P0011 and similar)
  • Unstable operation of the variable valve timing system
  • The scanner shows an implausible oil temperature
  • The instrument panel display shows incorrect oil temperature readings (if any)

Causes

  • Oil temperature sensor failure (internal characteristic offset)
  • Contamination or partial oxidation of the sensor connector
  • Damage to sensor wiring
  • Real problems with oil overheating (faulty oil cooler, oil thermostat)
  • Low oil level leading to overheating

How to Fix

  1. Read codes and see real-time oil temperature readings
  2. Compare the oil temperature with the coolant temperature - when the engine is warm, the oil is usually 10-20°C warmer than the antifreeze
  3. Check the level and condition of the engine oil
  4. Inspect the sensor connector for oxidation and connection reliability
  5. Measure the resistance of the sensor at a known oil temperature (the norm depends on the type of sensor)
  6. If the sensor is faulty, replace it; if the oil overheats, diagnose the oil cooling system
