Symptoms

Causes

  • Faulty EGR valve position sensor
  • Open or short circuit in the sensor wiring harness
  • Poor electrical connection (oxidation, corrosion of contacts)
  • Dirty or stuck EGR valve
  • Malfunction of the EGR control solenoid valve (solenoid)
  • Mechanical damage to the sensor
  • Failure of the engine control unit (ECU)

How to Fix

  1. Read trouble codes and freeze frame data with an OBD-II scanner
  2. Visually check the EGR sensor wiring harness and connectors for damage and corrosion.
  3. Check the supply voltage and reference voltage at the sensor
  4. Check sensor signal to factory specifications
  5. Clean or replace the EGR sensor if necessary
  6. Check and clean the EGR valve and channels from carbon deposits
  7. If necessary, replace the entire EGR valve assembly
  8. Clear error codes and test drive to check
