Symptoms

  • Check Engine light comes on
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Unstable engine idling
  • Smell of gasoline in/near the car

Causes

  • Open or shorted sensor wiring harness
  • Poor contact in sensor/ECU connectors
  • EVAP system pressure sensor malfunction
  • Leakage in the EVAP system (cracked hoses, leaking valves)
  • Damaged or loose fuel cap

How to Fix

  1. Check the tightness of the fuel tank cap
  2. Visually inspect the sensor wiring harness and connectors for damage.
  3. Check the resistance and continuity of the sensor circuit
  4. Check supply voltage and sensor signal
  5. Test the EVAP system for leaks (with a smoke machine or scanner)
  6. If necessary, replace the EVAP system pressure sensor
