P0462

Fuel Level Sensor A Circuit Low

Severity: MEDIUM

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light Is On
  • Incorrect readings of the fuel level indicator (arrow at zero or below)
  • Low fuel light stays on constantly
  • Unable to determine actual fuel level
  • Possible risk of stopping due to lack of fuel if the level is undetected

Causes

  • Break in the wiring of the fuel level sensor
  • Faulty rheostatic fuel level sensor (wear of the resistive element)
  • Disconnected or deformed float
  • Oxidation or corrosion of the sensor connector
  • Poor grounding of the sensor or instrument unit
  • Faulty dashboard control unit
  • Damage to the fuel pump with integrated sensor

How to Fix

  1. Read all error codes
  2. Check the fuse and power relay of the instrument panel
  3. Check the voltage in the fuel level sensor connector with the ignition on
  4. Measure the resistance of the sensor with a full and empty tank (the norm varies by brand)
  5. Inspect the sensor connector for corrosion and damage.
  6. Check sensor grounding
  7. Remove the fuel pump with sensor and check the float and rheostat
  8. Replace the fuel level sensor (usually complete with pump)
  9. Reset the code and check the indicator readings
