P0462
Fuel Level Sensor A Circuit Low
Severity: MEDIUM
Symptoms
- Check Engine Light Is On
- Incorrect readings of the fuel level indicator (arrow at zero or below)
- Low fuel light stays on constantly
- Unable to determine actual fuel level
- Possible risk of stopping due to lack of fuel if the level is undetected
Causes
- Break in the wiring of the fuel level sensor
- Faulty rheostatic fuel level sensor (wear of the resistive element)
- Disconnected or deformed float
- Oxidation or corrosion of the sensor connector
- Poor grounding of the sensor or instrument unit
- Faulty dashboard control unit
- Damage to the fuel pump with integrated sensor
How to Fix
- Read all error codes
- Check the fuse and power relay of the instrument panel
- Check the voltage in the fuel level sensor connector with the ignition on
- Measure the resistance of the sensor with a full and empty tank (the norm varies by brand)
- Inspect the sensor connector for corrosion and damage.
- Check sensor grounding
- Remove the fuel pump with sensor and check the float and rheostat
- Replace the fuel level sensor (usually complete with pump)
- Reset the code and check the indicator readings
