P0484

Fan Circuit Current High

Severity
🔴 High
Can you drive?
Do not drive — repair immediately
Approx. repair cost
$33–156 (est.)

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light Is On
  • Fan does not start (ECU cuts circuit for protection)
  • Fan fuse trips intermittently
  • Engine overheating
  • Burnt smell from engine compartment
  • The fan may hum when trying to start (mechanical blockage)

Causes

  • Fan impeller jamming (foreign object, bearing failure)
  • Turn-to-turn short circuit in the fan motor winding
  • Short circuit in fan circuit wiring
  • Faulty fan relay (permanent contact)
  • Short circuit in the fan control module
  • Damage to wiring from abrasion on the body or hot engine parts

How to Fix

  1. Turn off the power and manually check the fan impeller for free rotation.
  2. Check the fan motor: measure the resistance of the windings (if you have a diagram)
  3. Check fan circuit fuse - blown fuse confirms high current
  4. Inspect the fan wiring harness for melting or chafing.
  5. Check the relay connector and control module for signs of overheating and melting
  6. Replace the fan motor if it is stuck or internally shorted
  7. Replace damaged wiring
  8. Reset codes and ensure normal current consumption after repair
