Cold Start Engine Coolant Temperature Performance

Severity
⚠️ Medium
Can you drive?
Limited driving only, diagnose soon
Approx. repair cost
$6–167 (est.)

Symptoms

  • Long engine warm-up
  • Unstable engine operation at idle
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Reduced efficiency of the interior heating system
  • Possible misfires during warm-up

Causes

  • Faulty coolant temperature sensor (DTOZH)
  • Thermostat stuck open
  • Problems with the temperature sensor wiring harness
  • Low coolant level
  • Malfunction of the DTOZH heater circuit (if provided)
  • Problems with the engine control unit (ECU)

How to Fix

  1. Check the level and condition of the coolant
  2. Carry out diagnostics of the thermostat (warm up the engine before opening)
  3. Check the DTOZh readings with a scanner and compare with the actual temperature
  4. Inspect the wiring harness and sensor connector for corrosion and damage.
  5. If necessary, replace the coolant temperature sensor
  6. Replacing the thermostat when a malfunction is detected
  7. Flush the cooling system if there is contamination
  8. Check the operation of the sensor heating circuit (if provided for in the design)
  9. Reset error code after repair
