Symptoms

  • Unstable operation at idle during cold start
  • Increased emissions during warm-up period
  • Slow catalyst heating
  • Check Engine Light Illuminates
  • Possible timing noise during startup

Causes

  • VVT camshaft actuator sticking in advance position
  • Excessive oil pressure in the VVT system
  • Malfunction of the timing control solenoid
  • Incorrect camshaft position sensor signal
  • Stretched or incorrectly installed timing chain

How to Fix

  1. Check engine oil level and pressure
  2. Diagnose the VVT solenoid: power supply, control signal, resistance
  3. Check the camshaft position sensor and compare the data with the crankshaft sensor
  4. Inspect the condition of the timing chain for tension
  5. Flush or replace the valve timing actuator
  6. If necessary, perform timing synchronization
