Symptoms

  • ABS and/or ESP indicator lights up
  • Check Engine Light Illuminates
  • Incorrect operation or disabling of cruise control
  • Regenerative braking malfunction (for hybrids/electric vehicles)
  • Possible spontaneous braking or failure of electronic systems

Causes

  • Short circuit of the sensor signal wire to power
  • Malfunction of the brake pedal position sensor
  • Damage or oxidation of the sensor connector
  • Malfunction of the ECU or ABS/ESP module
  • Mechanical jamming of the pedal assembly (rare)

How to Fix

  1. Read all error codes (ABS, ESP, ECU) for a complete picture
  2. Check the voltage on the signal wire of the sensor with the pedal pressed and released
  3. Inspect the sensor connector for damage and oxidation.
  4. Measure sensor resistance and compare with specification
  5. Check signal wire for short circuit to power
  6. Replace the brake pedal position sensor
