Symptoms
- Check Engine light is on
- The engine is overheating or running at too low a temperature
- Increased fuel consumption
- Poor performance of the interior heating system
- Possible burning smell from overheating coolant
Causes
- Thermostat heater control wire short circuit to ground
- Oxidation or destruction of the thermostat connector
- Internal breakdown of the thermostat heating element
- Damage to wiring (chaining of insulation)
- Malfunction of the control circuit in the ECU (rare)
How to Fix
- Read all error codes with a scanner, record related codes
- Visually inspect the connector and wiring of the thermostat, check the integrity of the insulation
- Measure the voltage on the thermostat control circuit with the ignition on
- Check for a short to ground in the control wire using a multimeter.
- Measure the resistance of the thermostat heating element (the norm is indicated in the specification)
- Replace the thermostat if it is confirmed to be faulty
- Reset error codes and take a test drive
