Symptoms

  • Check Engine light is on
  • The engine is overheating or running at too low a temperature
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Poor performance of the interior heating system
  • Possible burning smell from overheating coolant

Causes

  • Thermostat heater control wire short circuit to ground
  • Oxidation or destruction of the thermostat connector
  • Internal breakdown of the thermostat heating element
  • Damage to wiring (chaining of insulation)
  • Malfunction of the control circuit in the ECU (rare)

How to Fix

  1. Read all error codes with a scanner, record related codes
  2. Visually inspect the connector and wiring of the thermostat, check the integrity of the insulation
  3. Measure the voltage on the thermostat control circuit with the ignition on
  4. Check for a short to ground in the control wire using a multimeter.
  5. Measure the resistance of the thermostat heating element (the norm is indicated in the specification)
  6. Replace the thermostat if it is confirmed to be faulty
  7. Reset error codes and take a test drive
