Symptoms

  • The Check Engine light comes on
  • Fuel cap indicator does not work
  • Or the indicator is constantly on
  • No engine problems
  • There may be no warning when the tank lid is open

Causes

  • Burnt out fuel tank cap indicator lamp
  • Open or short circuit in the lamp control circuit
  • Instrument panel unit malfunction
  • Corrosion in control circuit connector
  • Internal ECU output fault

How to Fix

  1. Check the fuel cap indicator on the dashboard
  2. Measure the voltage at the lamp control connector
  3. Check the wiring from the ECU to the instrument panel
  4. Reset error and check for recurrence
  5. If the lamp and wiring are in good working order - diagnostics of the computer or instrument panel
