Symptoms

  • The Check Engine light comes on
  • Heavy steering, especially at low speeds
  • EPS or power steering light comes on
  • Unstable gain: sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t
  • Extraneous noise from the steering pump or motor

Causes

  • Open or shorted in the steering pump control circuit
  • Faulty power steering pump relay
  • EHPS electric pump malfunction
  • Failure in data exchange between the ECU and the EPS unit
  • Damage to the connector or wiring of the steering system

How to Fix

  1. Read error codes from the EPS control unit (if separate)
  2. Check the power steering pump fuse and relay
  3. Check the control wire between the ECU and the relay/pump
  4. Measure the pump supply voltage with the engine running
  5. Check hydraulic fluid level (for EHPS)
  6. If the wiring is in good condition - diagnostics of the pump and EPS unit
