Symptoms

  • Heavy or unstable steering wheel
  • Check Engine light comes on
  • EPS/EPAS indicator on the instrument panel
  • Power steering is in emergency mode
  • The power steering may turn off spontaneously

Causes

  • Short circuit of the control circuit to the power source
  • Damaged power steering wiring insulation
  • Electric Power Steering (EPS) module malfunction
  • Lost contact in control circuit connectors
  • ECU malfunction

How to Fix

  1. Read all error codes, record the order in which they appear
  2. Check control circuit wiring for short to positive
  3. Inspect and clean all EPS module connectors
  4. Check the integrity of the fuses and relays of the EPS system
  5. Test the EPS module using a dealer or third party scanner
  6. If a malfunction is confirmed, replace the EPS module or ECU
