Symptoms

• The Check Engine light does not light up when the ignition is turned on (self-test)
• If there are other error codes, the lamp does not light up
• Code P0650 is detected only when diagnosed by a scanner
• Otherwise the car works fine
• Possible constant lighting of MIL (with a short circuit to positive)

Causes

• Burnt out MIL lamp in dashboard
• MIL lamp control circuit wire open
• MIL control circuit short circuit
• Malfunction of the ECU output stage (lamp control)
• Malfunction of the instrument panel control unit

How to Fix

1. Check the MIL lamp when the ignition is turned on (should remain on for 3-5 seconds during self-test)
2. Replace a burnt out lamp in the dashboard
3. Check the control wire from the ECU to the dashboard
4. Measure the voltage at the ECU control output when attempting to turn on the MIL
5. Check the dashboard fuses
6. If the ECU output malfunctions, repair or replace the unit
