Symptoms

  • Forced engine shutdown while driving
  • Check Engine Light Is On, Multiple Lights Possible
  • Emergency mode with sharp power limitation
  • Inability to restart without resetting codes
  • Possible jerking or loss of traction before stopping the engine

Causes

  • Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) system critical malfunction
  • Failure of the traction control or stability control system (ESP/ASR)
  • Critical error in the automatic transmission or transfer case control system
  • Internal ECU malfunction that initiated protective shutdown
  • Chain reaction of several faults leading to protection activation

How to Fix

  1. Stop the vehicle safely immediately when the protection is triggered.
  2. Read ALL DTCs - P06AF is always accompanied by other root cause codes
  3. Eliminate the root cause (TAC, ESP, automatic transmission codes, etc.) before resetting P06AF
  4. Perform a full diagnostic of all control units using a factory scanner
  5. Make sure the system is working correctly before resetting the protection
  6. Reset codes and perform an extended test drive with monitoring
