Symptoms

• Slightly difficult engine starting in cold weather
• Check Engine Light Is On
• Slight white smoke on cold start
• Unstable operation when warming up in frosty weather
• Increased starter cranking time at low temperatures

Causes

• Worn or partially damaged heating element of cylinder 1 glow plug
• Poor contact or oxidation in the glow plug connector
• Damage to wire insulation (partial short circuit)
• Incipient relay or glow plug control module failure
• Corrosion of the glow plug terminal itself

How to Fix

1. Read error codes, record frozen frame data
2. Check the resistance of the glow plug of cylinder 1 (normal 0.5–2 Ohm)
3. Inspect the spark plug connector and terminal for oxidation, clean if necessary
4. Check the current through the spark plug during the warm-up cycle using a current clamp meter.
5. Replace the glow plug if abnormal performance is confirmed
6. Reset codes, check for errors after replacement
