Symptoms

  • Check Engine light on
  • Misfire in one or more cylinders
  • Reduced engine power
  • Dark smoke from the exhaust pipe
  • Increased fuel consumption

Causes

  • Fuel injector malfunction detected by FICM
  • Internal failure of the FICM itself
  • Problems with FICM high voltage supply
  • Damage to the wiring harness between the FICM and the injectors
  • Poor quality diesel fuel causing problems with injectors

How to Fix

  1. Read all error codes, including FICM codes (manufacturer specific)
  2. Check FICM operating voltage (48 V on Ford Power Stroke)
  3. Inspect the wiring between the FICM and the injectors for damage.
  4. Perform an injector test with a diagnostic scanner
  5. Check fuel quality and diagnose injectors
  6. If the FICM is internally faulty, consider repair or replacement.
