Symptoms

  • Automatic transmission goes into emergency mode
  • Discrepancy between the position of the selector and the actual operating mode of the automatic transmission
  • The Check Engine light comes on
  • Inability to switch to certain modes (for example, reverse)
  • The car may not start (start lock is not in P/N)

Causes

  • Mechanical binding or wear of the multi-function switch
  • Open or short circuit in switch circuit wiring
  • Poor electrical contact in connectors
  • Selector lever position sensor malfunction
  • Transmission control module (TCM) internal malfunction

How to Fix

  1. Carry out diagnostics with a scanner to read current data from the range switch
  2. Visually check the mechanical part of the selector and the drive cable for jamming
  3. Check the integrity of the wiring, connectors and ground of the switch circuit
  4. Check and, if necessary, replace the multifunction range switch
  5. If necessary, check or reflash the transmission control module (TCM)
