Symptoms

• Incorrect gear shifting
• Transmission transition to emergency mode
• The Check Engine light comes on
• Reduced vehicle dynamics
• Problems starting the engine (on some models)

Causes

• Short circuit of the sensor circuit to positive
• Shift position sensor malfunction
• Broken or damaged wiring
• Connector problems or contact corrosion
• Transmission control module (TCM) malfunction

How to Fix

1. Check the integrity of the wiring and connectors in the sensor circuit
2. Measure resistance and voltage at shift position sensor
3. Check for a short circuit to positive in the circuit
4. If necessary, replace the gearshift position sensor
5. Check and, if necessary, replace the transmission control module (TCM)
