Symptoms

  • Unstable engine idling
  • Loss of engine power
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Difficulty starting the engine
  • Black smoke from the exhaust pipe (when the mixture is over-rich)

Causes

  • Wear or damage to the cam disk, rotor or plunger pair of the injection pump
  • Fuel control solenoid valve malfunction
  • Mechanical fuel quantity regulator stuck
  • Low fuel pressure in the priming system
  • Contamination of fuel or water in the fuel system

How to Fix

  1. Check the pressure in the low pressure fuel line
  2. Diagnose the operation of the fuel injection pump control solenoid valve
  3. Check the condition of the fuel filter and the presence of water in the fuel
  4. Remove and diagnose the injection pump on a bench to assess the wear of the plunger pair and other components
  5. If necessary, replace or repair the injection pump
