Symptoms

  • Incorrect engine temperature readings on the dashboard
  • Engine overheating
  • Reduced engine performance
  • Turning on the Check Engine Light
  • Unstable operation of the cooling system

Causes

  • Open or short circuit in the wiring to the sensor
  • Faulty valve position sensor
  • Poor electrical connection or corroded connectors
  • Flow control valve itself is faulty
  • Problems with the engine ECU (rare)

How to Fix

  1. Visual inspection of wiring and connectors for damage and corrosion
  2. Checking the voltage and resistance of the sensor with a multimeter
  3. Cleaning electrical connector contacts
  4. Replacing a faulty position sensor
  5. Check and, if necessary, replace the coolant flow control valve
