Symptoms

  • The passive safety system fault lamp (SRS/Airbag) is on or flashing.
  • Security error message on display
  • The seat belt pretensioner does not operate during testing (diagnosis)

Causes

  • Open or poor contact in the pretensioner wiring harness
  • Faulty belt pretensioner squib
  • Short circuit to ground or to power
  • Malfunction of the SRS control unit itself
  • Corroded or damaged electrical connectors

How to Fix

  1. Conduct a visual inspection of the wiring harness and connectors for damage and corrosion.
  2. Check the resistance and continuity of the pretensioner squib circuit using a multimeter
  3. If a break or short circuit is detected, repair or replace the damaged section of the harness
  4. If the squib is faulty, replace the seat belt pretensioner assembly.
  5. Clear error codes from the SRS control unit memory and check if the fault returns
