Symptoms

  • ABS lamp flashes intermittently
  • Jerking or abnormal operation of ABS when braking
  • Unstable speedometer readings
  • Disabling ESP and traction control
  • Incorrect operation of cruise control

Causes

  • Damage or contamination of the drive ring (impulse rotor)
  • Wheel bearing play causing clearance change
  • Partial damage to the sensor wiring (frayed insulation)
  • Oxidation of contacts in the sensor connector
  • Loose speed sensor
  • Metal shavings sticking to the sensor

How to Fix

  1. Read errors and check speed sensor data in real time with a scanner
  2. Compare the rear sensor readings with others while driving
  3. Inspect the drive ring for damage, dirt, and adhering chips.
  4. Check wheel bearing play
  5. Inspect the sensor wiring along its entire length, especially in kinks.
  6. Clean or replace the setting ring, replace the sensor if necessary
