Symptoms

  • ABS warning light is on
  • ABS, ESP and traction control systems are disabled
  • Possible false alarms of ABS when braking
  • Unstable speed readings on the display
  • Incorrect operation of the odometer

Causes

  • Right front wheel speed sensor dirty
  • Increased gap between sensor and drive ring
  • Damage to the sensor wiring (chafing, wire breakage)
  • Malfunction of the sensor itself (internal defect of channel B)
  • Worn or damaged drive ring on the hub
  • Wheel bearing play of the right front wheel

How to Fix

  1. Read error codes and check the data of all speed sensors with a scanner
  2. Inspect the right front wheel speed sensor - clean from dirt and metal shavings
  3. Check the gap between the sensor and the drive ring
  4. Measure the resistance and voltage of the sensor signal (both channels)
  5. Inspect the wiring from the sensor to the ABS unit for damage.
  6. Check the drive ring and wheel bearing for play
  7. Replace the sensor if it is confirmed to be faulty
