Symptoms

  • The AWD or 4WD lamp on the instrument panel is on
  • Disabling the AWC all-wheel drive system
  • The car only operates in rear-wheel drive or front-wheel drive mode
  • Possible related codes for C1617 and other AWC subsystems
  • Clicking or lack of response when trying to engage all-wheel drive

Causes

  • Malfunction of the electronic power relay of the AWC actuator
  • Blown fuse in relay circuit
  • Open or shorted relay wiring
  • Oxidation of relay connector contacts
  • AWC control unit malfunction

How to Fix

  1. Check the AWC relay circuit fuse according to the car diagram
  2. Check the relay: apply power directly and check the contacts are closed
  3. Measure the voltage of the relay control circuit (signal from the ECU)
  4. Inspect the relay connector for oxidation and damage.
  5. Replace the relay if the fault is confirmed
  6. Check the operation of the AWC actuator after replacing the relay
