Symptoms

  • Unstable idle
  • Loss of engine power
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Difficulty starting the engine
  • Jerks when accelerating
  • Check Engine Light Illuminates
  • Black smoke from the exhaust pipe

Causes

  • Faulty fuel volume regulator
  • Damage to wiring or connectors in the regulator circuit
  • Oxidation or corrosion of contacts
  • Engine control unit (ECU) malfunction
  • Problems with the high pressure fuel pump
  • Fuel filter clogged
  • Malfunction of fuel pressure sensors

How to Fix

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner and read all error codes
  2. Check the voltage and signals in the fuel volume regulator circuit
  3. Inspect wiring and connectors for damage
  4. Measure the resistance of the regulator circuit
  5. Check the operation of the fuel pump and the pressure in the system
  6. If necessary, replace the fuel volume regulator
  7. Clean or replace the fuel filter
  8. Check and, if necessary, replace damaged wiring
  9. Clear error codes and test drive
