Symptoms

- Difficulty starting the engine
- Metallic knock in the timing belt area
- Activating the Check Engine Light
Causes
- VVT solenoid valve malfunction
- Dirty or clogged VVT system oil passages
- Worn or damaged camshaft phase shifter
- Camshaft position sensor malfunction
- Low engine oil pressure
- Using unsuitable or contaminated engine oil
- Open or short circuit in VVT system wiring
- Engine ECU malfunction
How to Fix
- Connect the OBD-II scanner and read all error codes
- Check the level and quality of the engine oil, replace if necessary
- Inspect the VVT system wiring and connectors for damage.
- Check the operation of the VVT solenoid valve with a multimeter
- Measure the oil pressure in the system
- Check the resistance and signal of the camshaft position sensor
- If necessary, flush the oil passages of the VVT system
- Replace faulty components (VVT valve, sensors, phase shifter)
- Clear error codes and test drive
