Symptoms

• Unstable engine idling
• Loss of power and deterioration in dynamics
• Increased fuel consumption
• Metallic knock in the engine
• Difficulty starting the engine
• Activation of emergency operation mode of the internal combustion engine
• Check Engine Light Is On

Causes

• Stretched or broken timing chain
• Timing chain tensioner wear
• Malfunction of the variable valve timing (VVT) system
• Failure of the camshaft position sensor
• Crankshaft position sensor malfunction
• Low oil pressure in the VVT system
• Contamination of oil channels of the VVT system
• Incorrect installation of timing marks
• Wear of timing chain guides
• VVT clutch malfunction

How to Fix

1. Connect a diagnostic scanner and read all error codes
2. Check the level and condition of the engine oil
3. Visually inspect the timing chain through the oil filler neck
4. Check the operation of the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors
5. Measure the oil pressure in the system
6. Remove the timing cover and check the condition of the chain and tensioner
7. Check that the timing marks are installed correctly
8. If necessary, replace the timing chain and tensioner
9. Check and clean VVT system
10. Replace faulty sensors
11. Carry out control diagnostics after repair
