Symptoms

• Unstable engine idling
• Reduced power and acceleration dynamics

Causes

• Stretched or worn timing chain
• Timing chain tensioner wear
• Malfunction of the VVT (variable valve timing) system
• Incorrect installation of timing marks during repairs
• Crankshaft position sensor malfunction
• Camshaft position sensor malfunction
• Wear of timing chain guides
• Low oil pressure in the VVT system

How to Fix

1. Connect a diagnostic scanner and read all error codes
2. Check the operation of the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors
3. Inspect the timing chain/belt for wear and stretching.
4. Check timing chain tension and tensioner condition
5. Diagnose the VVT variable valve timing system
6. Check oil pressure and quality
7. If necessary, replace the timing chain and related components.
8. Set the correct timing marks
9. Clear error codes and test drive
