Symptoms

  • Check Engine light is on
  • Reduced engine power, especially in mid and high speed ranges
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Unstable engine operation at idle is possible
  • Limited accelerator pedal response

Causes

  • Open or short circuit to ground in the camshaft actuator wiring
  • Oxidation or damage to the cam profile change actuator connector
  • Internal failure of the electromagnetic actuator
  • Insufficient oil pressure affecting the operation of the actuator hydraulic drive
  • Engine ECU malfunction

How to Fix

  1. Read frozen frame codes and data to determine error conditions
  2. Check the camshaft control circuit fuse
  3. Measure the resistance of the actuator winding (the norm is usually 7–15 Ohms)
  4. Check the supply voltage and grounding of the actuator with the engine running
  5. Inspect the wiring from the ECU to the actuator for damage
  6. If the wiring is in good condition, replace the camshaft cam profile change actuator
