Symptoms

• Unstable engine idling
• Reduced power and torque
• Increased fuel consumption
• Difficulty starting the engine
• Check Engine Light Illuminated
• Detonation during acceleration
• Uneven engine operation during transient conditions

Causes

• Faulty intake valve VVT solenoid
• Contaminated or unsuitable engine oil
• Clogged oil channels of the VVT system
• Open or short circuit in solenoid wiring
• Camshaft position sensor malfunction
• Mechanical wear of the phase change system
• Low oil pressure in the system
• Engine control unit malfunction

How to Fix

1. Check the level and quality of the engine oil, replace if necessary
2. Diagnose the electrical circuit of the VVT solenoid with a multimeter
3. Check solenoid resistance (usually 6-12 ohms)
4. Inspect the wiring for damage, oxidation of contacts
5. Clean or replace intake valve VVT solenoid
6. Flush the oil channels of the phase change system
7. Check the operation of the camshaft position sensor
8. Test the oil pressure in the system
9. Clear error memory and test drive
