Mass or Volume Air Flow Sensor A Circuit Intermittent

Severity: MEDIUM

Symptoms

  • Unstable idle speed
  • Periodic jerks during acceleration
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Difficulty starting the engine
  • Intermittent power drop
  • Black smoke from the exhaust pipe

Causes

  • Mass air flow sensor dirty
  • Oxidation or corrosion of sensor contacts
  • Damage to the wiring to the mass air flow sensor
  • Poor sensor connector connection
  • Vibrations causing periodic contact breaks
  • Oil or dirt on the sensor element
  • Worn mass air flow sensor

How to Fix

  1. Check the MAF sensor connector for a secure connection.
  2. Clean the connector contacts from oxides and corrosion
  3. Remove and clean the sensor with a special cleaner for mass air flow sensor
  4. Check the integrity of the wiring to the sensor with a multimeter
  5. Secure wiring from vibrations and mechanical damage
  6. If necessary, replace damaged wires
  7. If cleaning does not help, replace the MAF sensor
  8. Clear error codes and test drive
