Symptoms

• Check Engine Light (often with power limitation)
• Detonation knocking noise when accelerating
• Engine overheating
• Sharp reduction in power
• Rough engine operation with metallic knocks

Causes

• Detonation due to low octane fuel
• Pre-ignition (glow ignition)
• Incorrect ignition timing
• Overheating of the engine or individual cylinder
• Cooling system or EGR malfunction

How to Fix

1. Stop driving immediately if there are metallic knocks.
2. Check the cooling system - coolant level and temperature
3. Make sure you are using fuel with the correct octane rating
4. Check the ignition timing and condition of the spark plugs
5. Check the operation of the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system
