Symptoms

• Check Engine light is on
• The smell of fuel near the car
• EVAP System Purge Test Failure
• Slight enrichment of the fuel mixture (if the valve is stuck open)
• Unstable idle under some conditions
• Increased fuel consumption in the long term

Causes

• Open circuit in the EVAP purge valve control circuit wiring
• Shorting the control wire to power
• Internal open in purge valve solenoid
• Damaged or oxidized valve connector
• Malfunction of the EVAP system power relay (on some cars)
• Damage to the ECU control circuit (rare)

How to Fix

1. Find EVAP purge valve A using the car's wiring diagram
2. Inspect the valve connector and wiring for damage.
3. Check the resistance of the valve solenoid (normal 15–30 ohms; infinity - open)
4. Check the control circuit from the computer to the valve for an open circuit and short to power
5. Apply 12V voltage directly to the valve - it should click and open
6. Replace the purge valve if the solenoid is broken internally
7. Eliminate wiring damage due to external causes
8. Reset code and perform EVAP test
