Symptoms
- Check Engine light is on
- The smell of fuel near the car
- EVAP System Purge Test Failure
- Slight enrichment of the fuel mixture (if the valve is stuck open)
- Unstable idle under some conditions
- Increased fuel consumption in the long term
Causes
- Open circuit in the EVAP purge valve control circuit wiring
- Shorting the control wire to power
- Internal open in purge valve solenoid
- Damaged or oxidized valve connector
- Malfunction of the EVAP system power relay (on some cars)
- Damage to the ECU control circuit (rare)
How to Fix
- Find EVAP purge valve A using the car's wiring diagram
- Inspect the valve connector and wiring for damage.
- Check the resistance of the valve solenoid (normal 15–30 ohms; infinity - open)
- Check the control circuit from the computer to the valve for an open circuit and short to power
- Apply 12V voltage directly to the valve - it should click and open
- Replace the purge valve if the solenoid is broken internally
- Eliminate wiring damage due to external causes
- Reset code and perform EVAP test
