Do not drive — repair immediately
Approx. repair cost
$33–200 (est.)
Symptoms
- Check Engine Light Is On
- Reduced engine power
- Deterioration of the EGR system
- Unstable engine operation
- Increased exhaust smoke (diesel)
- Possible activation of engine emergency mode
Causes
- Faulty valve position sensor (worn out or overheated)
- Damaged sensor connector or wiring
- Stuck pressure control valve
- Contamination of the sensor with carbon deposits from exhaust gases
- Mechanical damage to the sensor linkage
- ECU malfunction (rare)
How to Fix
- Read a frozen frame - record the conditions for the occurrence of the code
- Check the valve position sensor connector: integrity, oxidation
- Measure the sensor supply voltage (usually 5V) and signal voltage
- Manually move the valve stem - check if the sensor signal changes
- Clean the sensor and valve mechanism from carbon deposits
- Check the mechanical connection between the valve and the sensor for play or damage
- Replace the position sensor if the characteristics deviate
- If the valve is stuck, replace the valve assembly with sensor
- Reset codes and check system operation on a test drive
