Crankcase Ventilation System Performance

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light Is On
  • Increased oil consumption
  • The smell of burning oil or smoke coming from under the hood
  • Oil deposits in the intake manifold and throttle body
  • Unstable engine operation at idle
  • Oil leaks through seals

Causes

  • Clogged or faulty PCV valve
  • Clogged crankcase ventilation hoses
  • Rupture or crack in PCV hose
  • Excessive blow-by due to worn piston rings
  • Malfunction of the oil separator (separator)
  • Frozen hose or PCV valve in cold weather

How to Fix

  1. Read error codes and check freeze frame data
  2. Inspect the PCV valve - shake it, it should rattle characteristically (if it is a ball type)
  3. Check PCV hoses for cracks, hardening and blockages
  4. Check the crankcase pressure with the engine running
  5. Replace the PCV valve if clogged or broken
  6. Clean or replace clogged ventilation hoses
  7. Check the oil separator and replace if necessary
  8. Reset the error and take a test drive
