Symptoms

  • The Check Engine light comes on
  • Incorrect speedometer readings
  • Automatic transmission malfunctions
  • Failure or unstable operation of cruise control
  • Errors in speed-related ESP/ABS systems

Causes

  • Open or short circuit in VSS output signal circuit
  • Damage to the connector or wiring between the ECU and consumers
  • Internal ECU fault (signal driver output)
  • Malfunction of the device receiving the signal (instrument panel, automatic transmission ECU)
  • Signal wire shielding broken

How to Fix

  1. Read all error codes from all control units
  2. Check the wiring and connectors in the VSS output signal circuit from the ECU
  3. Measure the signal at the ECU output with an oscilloscope - compare with the norm
  4. Check the signal receiver (instrument panel, automatic transmission ECU) for errors
  5. Eliminate breaks or short circuits in the wiring
  6. If the wiring is in good condition - diagnostics and repair/replacement of the ECU
