Symptoms

  • The Check Engine light comes on
  • Difficulty starting or failure to start
  • Unstable engine operation
  • Misfire
  • Injector failure due to faulty FICM power relay

Causes

  • Faulty FICM power relay (stuck, coil broken)
  • Open or short circuit in the relay control circuit
  • Damage to relay connector or wiring
  • ECU malfunction (relay control output transistor)
  • Relay circuit fuse is damaged

How to Fix

  1. Check FICM relay circuit fuse
  2. Check FICM relay - replace with a known good one
  3. Measure the voltage on the relay coil when commanded by the ECU
  4. Check the wiring and connectors between the ECU and the relay for open/short circuits
  5. If the external circuit is normal, check the output signal of the relay control ECU
  6. If the ECU is confirmed to be faulty, repair or replace the unit
