Symptoms
- The Check Engine light comes on
- Difficulty starting the engine, especially when cold
- Misfire, engine vibration
- Black or white smoke from the exhaust pipe
- Significant reduction in power and traction
Causes
- FICM internal fault
- Unstable FICM supply voltage
- Damage to high voltage capacitors inside the FICM
- Corrosion or break in the ECU-FICM communication circuit
- FICM overheating
How to Fix
- Check the FICM supply voltage (on Ford 6.0L the norm is 48 V under load)
- Read FICM self-diagnosis data via a professional scanner
- Check the wiring and connectors between the ECU and FICM
- Measure the FICM control signals on the injectors with an oscilloscope
- If the voltage drops below normal - repair or replace the FICM
- Replace FICM if internal fault is confirmed
