Starter Relay A Circuit

Symptoms

  • The Check Engine light comes on
  • Difficulty starting or lack of response to the ignition key
  • The starter does not turn or does not always turn
  • Starter continues to operate after engine starts (sticking)
  • Relay clicks without starter turning

Causes

  • Faulty starter relay
  • Open or short circuit in the relay control circuit
  • Damage to relay connector or wiring
  • Malfunction of the ignition switch in the control circuit
  • Internal ECU fault

How to Fix

  1. Check starter circuit fuse
  2. Check the starter relay - replace it with a good one
  3. Measure the voltage on the relay coil when turning the ignition key
  4. Check the wiring from the ignition switch to the relay and from the relay to the starter
  5. Make sure the neutral switch (automatic transmission) is working properly
  6. If the external circuits are in good condition, check the ECU control signal
