Starter Relay A Circuit Low

Symptoms

  • The Check Engine light comes on
  • Difficulty starting, especially in cold weather
  • Slow starter rotation
  • Unstable startup: sometimes normal, sometimes not
  • Relay clicks without starter turning

Causes

  • Discharged or weak battery
  • Oxidation of starter relay connector contacts
  • Poor grounding of the starter or ECU
  • Increased resistance in the relay power circuit
  • Partially damaged starter circuit wiring

How to Fix

  1. Check the battery voltage (normal 12.4–12.6 V at rest)
  2. Check the voltage when cranking with the starter (not lower than 10 V)
  3. Clean and tighten battery terminals and relay contacts
  4. Check starter ground circuit resistance
  5. Measure the voltage drop across the starter circuit wires
  6. Replace the battery if the capacity is insufficient
