Symptoms

  • Check Engine light comes on
  • Cold start problems
  • Unstable idle when warming up
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • The engine may not reach operating temperature or overheat

Causes

  • Coolant temperature (ECT) sensor malfunction
  • Open or short circuit in the ECT sensor circuit
  • Adaptation failed after replacing ECU or sensor
  • Oxidation of the ECT sensor connector
  • ECU malfunction

How to Fix

  1. Check the ECT sensor signal with a scanner (with a cold engine the value should be close to the ambient temperature)
  2. Inspect the ECT sensor connector for oxidation and damage.
  3. Check the resistance of the ECT sensor with a multimeter
  4. Inspect the wiring from the sensor to the ECU
  5. If the sensor is faulty, replace it
  6. Perform the onboarding procedure if necessary
