Symptoms
- Check Engine light comes on
- Cold start problems
- Unstable idle when warming up
- Increased fuel consumption
- The engine may not reach operating temperature or overheat
Causes
- Coolant temperature (ECT) sensor malfunction
- Open or short circuit in the ECT sensor circuit
- Adaptation failed after replacing ECU or sensor
- Oxidation of the ECT sensor connector
- ECU malfunction
How to Fix
- Check the ECT sensor signal with a scanner (with a cold engine the value should be close to the ambient temperature)
- Inspect the ECT sensor connector for oxidation and damage.
- Check the resistance of the ECT sensor with a multimeter
- Inspect the wiring from the sensor to the ECU
- If the sensor is faulty, replace it
- Perform the onboarding procedure if necessary
