Symptoms

  • Check Engine light comes on
  • Incorrect fuel gauge readings
  • The fuel gauge is frozen in one position
  • The fuel reserve lamp does not light up when the level is low
  • The indicator always shows empty or full tank

Causes

  • ECU output circuit malfunction (fuel level signal)
  • Open or short circuit in the wiring between the ECU and the dashboard
  • Malfunction of the fuel level sensor itself in the tank
  • Malfunction of the fuel level indicator in the dashboard
  • ECU malfunction (rare)

How to Fix

  1. Check the actual fuel level and compare with the readings
  2. Check the signal from the fuel level sensor in the tank on the scanner
  3. Check the ECU output signal on the corresponding pin
  4. Inspect the wiring from the ECU to the dashboard
  5. Check the fuel gauge in the dashboard
  6. If necessary, replace the sensor, repair wiring or dashboard
